Antalya - City Center

The Antalya Region, offering all the mysticism of past in our day, is now called the “Turkish Riviera” due to its archaeological and natural beauties. Antalya is the place where sea, sun, history and nature constitute a perfect harmony and which also includes the most beautiful and clearest coast along the Mediterranean. The city still preserves its importance as a center throughout history in the south coast of the country, in addition to its wonderful natural beauties. The mythological city which housed the Gods and Goddesses now exhibits all its secrets and marvels to mankind.

Antalya is located in the west of the Mediterranean region. In ancient times it covered all Pamphylia which means “the land of all tribes”. The land really deserves the name since it has witnessed many successive civilizations throughout history. In 1st century BC the Pergamum king Attalus ordered his men to find the most beautiful piece of land on earth; he wanted them to find “heaven on earth”. After a long search all over the world, they discovered this land and said “This must be ‘Heaven’ ” and King Attalus founded the city giving it the name “Attaleia”. From then on many nations kept their eyes on the city. When the Romans took over the Pergamene Kingdom, Attaleia became an outstanding Roman city which the great Roman Emperor Hadrian visited in 130 AD; an arch was built in his honor which is now worth seeing. Then came the Byzantines, after which the Seljuk Turks took over the city in 1207 and gave it a different name, Adalya, and built the Yivli Minaret. The Ottomans followed the Seljuks and finally within the Turkish Republic it became a Turkish city and an important port. Antalya has been growing rapidly since 1960 and its population is 1,146,109 according to the 1990 census.

The climate of the province is typical Mediterranean: hot and dry in summers and temperate and rainy in winters. Sunshine is guaranteed from April to October and the winters are pleasantly mild. The humidity is a little bit high, about 64%, and the average water temperature is 21.5 °C. Antalya is really a heavenly place where the summer season is about 8-9 months long.

Local Transport

The most important local public transport vehicle is the Turkish dolmuş or mini bus. Read more about the dolmuş here. These buses provide service along fixed routes in towns and also between districts.

Currently, in the city of Antalya, two tramway lines connect important locations like the Antalya Airport AYT with Antalya’s city center. There are also larger public buses that operate in Antalya and Alanya. The payment for public transportation in Antalya and Alanya is made with the AntalyaKart and the AlanyaKart.

Long-distance busses are the most important means of transportation for travel between provinces in Turkey. They leave from the local bus station, called an otogar.

There are no train connections in Antalya!

Taxis in Antalya are generally a bit pricy compared to other transport options.

In the last few years, Turkey has been massively improving its infrastructure and now allows visitors and locals to use the latest technologies. Although the commute systems are quite similar to other cities in Europe, there are tips for quicker access and smoother travel.

In Antalya, the infrastructure is quite modern. The most important tip is about the AntalyaKart, an access card that will provide you great freedom to move around the city and use public transport. You will be able to travel cheaper with the card and free your mind of unnecessary worries concerning transport.

In this article, you will find important information about transport in Antalya and the AntalyaKart, including where to get it, how much it costs, and what it’s used for.

What Is the AntalyaKart?

The Antalya Kart is a card that is valid on all public buses and trams in Antalya. This is the card that allows you to move easily around the city. In fact, you can’t use public transportation in Antalya without it.

The credit card-sized card is made of plastic and very easy to carry. If you are a regular visitor to Antalya, you can keep the card and reuse it whenever you come back to the city.

Purchasing and Refilling Your AntalyaKart

The AntalyaKart can be purchased at authorized points of sale all around the city.

Many kiosks sell the AntalyaKart in the city. You can usually see it on the signs.

There are two points of sale in the airport that are open 24 hours a day.

You can buy the card from some vending machines mainly located around tramway stations and major bus stations. Here, you can load the card, too.

You can refill your AntalyaKart at any of these places. To do so, place the card on the designated viewing area, insert the banknote into the slot and wait until the new credit added to the card is displayed on the screen.

Cost of the AntalyaKart

To get your AntalyaKart, there is a one-time fee of 7.50 Turkish Liras (2021). The card is not nominative, so no photo or proof of identity is required. After the purchase, the card can be loaded as desired and used by several people at the same time.

If you want to have a personal AntalyaKart with a photo, you must apply for one at the central office, Çallı ve Doğu Garajı Kart Merkezi. For this, you need to fill out an application and provide an identity document. There is a one-time fee of 15 Turkish liras for nominative cards.
